Infectious necrotic hepatitis

  • Black disease
  • Black disease in sheep

Nature

An acute infectious disease of sheep (sometimes cattle, rarely pigs and horses) caused by Clostridium novyi Type B. The organism multiplies in areas of liver necrosis resulting from the migration of liver flukes, and it produces a powerful necrotizing toxin.

Incidence

The disease is worldwide, wherever sheep and liver flukes coincide. It is most prevalent in 1-4 year old sheep.
