Counter-claim

There is a deep-rooted stereotypic notion of unreliability and laziness of Gypsies. In both Slovak and Czech languages, the verb Gypsy is a synonym for telling lies. However, Gypsy apathy for work (although surely seasoned by ingrained bad habits) is an integral part of their lifestyle. Besides, traditional Roma consider it a shame, often resulting into alienation from their community, if they have good relations with the gadjo world. Also, Gypsies traditionally liked to tell stories and their inventiveness could lead to the notion that they were liars and untrustworthy. Understanding these cultural reasons could help to break this old stereotype.
