Hindrance of law enforcement
- Forcible obstruction of law enforcement
- Obstruction of justice
- Hindering apprehension of a felon
- Hindering prosecution of a felon
- Misprison of felon
- Offences against the administration of justice
Nature
A person is guilty of hindering law enforcement if he intentionally interferes with, delays or prevents the discovery, apprehension, prosecution, conviction or punishment of another. This may be by concealing the other; providing means of avoiding discovery or arrest including money, weapons, transport or disguise; or concealing, altering or destroying material with this intention. It may be by warning the other of their impending discovery in order that they by avoid arrest.
Incidence
A 2021 report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlights that over 30% of law enforcement agencies worldwide face significant operational hindrances, including lack of resources, political interference, and threats to personnel. These obstacles are particularly acute in regions with high levels of organized crime or political instability, such as parts of Central America, West Africa, and Southeast Asia, where law enforcement effectiveness is severely compromised.
In 2019, in the Mexican state of Michoacán, local police operations against drug cartels were repeatedly hindered by threats, bribery, and attacks on officers. This interference resulted in several failed arrests and increased cartel influence in the region.

Claim
The hindrance of law enforcement is a critical issue that undermines public safety and erodes trust in our justice system. When law enforcement agencies face obstacles—be it political interference, lack of resources, or community distrust—their ability to protect citizens and uphold the law is severely compromised. This not only emboldens criminals but also leaves vulnerable populations at risk. We must prioritize addressing these hindrances to ensure a fair, effective, and accountable law enforcement system for all.
Counter-claim
The notion that law enforcement faces significant hindrances is overstated and distracts from real issues. In a society where crime rates are declining and public safety is prioritized, focusing on perceived obstacles only undermines the effectiveness of our justice system. Law enforcement agencies are equipped with the resources and training necessary to tackle challenges head-on. Instead of amplifying concerns about hindrances, we should celebrate the successes and advancements in maintaining law and order.
