Forced confession always involves some form of torture. In sophisticated societies it is subtle methods of psychological torture than leave no physical evidence. In less sophisticated countries it is brutal physical torture. Frequently the goal of forced confession is not the truth but admission of guilt. At times this is to increase the conviction rate of a group of police officers. At other times it is to find a a person to blame publically for a crime that cannot be solved for one reason or another.
