Exceeding critical pollution loads

We live on a human-dominated planet, where no ecosystem on Earth's surface is free of pervasive human influence. We are not so much running out of stuff. We are running out of what the scientists call "sinks" -- places to put the by-products of our large appetites, notably still have the atmospheric equivalent of garbage dumps.
