Escaping reality through popular psychological frameworks

Claim

  1. People attempt to shield themselves from life by using popular psychological ideas to explain their experiences. They see themselves and their relationships through popular and/or pseudo-psychological categories, and attempt by these means to find a rational explanation for the overwhelming irrationalities of life. They may seek to insulate themselves from the reality of life by limiting their horizons, by basing their lives on slogans which tightly bracket people and events (thus fragmenting their lives and historical contexts), and by trying to preserve a sense of balance by reducing their world into manageable units.
