Drive-by shootings
- Random killing
Nature
The firing of a gun from a moving vehicle, called "drive-by shooting", is responsible for the death and maiming of innocent people and for an acute sense of insecurity in many neighbourhoods that are often not otherwise visibly touched by criminal activities. Drive-by shootings are not necessarily related to gang warfare or any other previously recognized form of organized crime. They are often random and unpredictable, thus increasing the fear they inspire.
Background
Drive-by shootings emerged as a recognized global concern in the late 20th century, initially drawing attention in the United States during the 1980s amid escalating gang violence. Media coverage and law enforcement reports highlighted their sudden, indiscriminate nature, prompting international awareness as similar incidents appeared in Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Over time, research and policy discussions have increasingly addressed their impact on urban safety and community trauma worldwide.
Incidence
There were 3500 drive-by shootings in Los Angeles in 1992. In southern California increasing attention is being given to the design of buildings, such as public schools, so as to make them less vulnerable to drive-by shootings.
Claim
Drive-by shootings are a devastating and urgent problem that tear apart families and communities. Innocent lives are lost in senseless acts of violence, often leaving lasting trauma and fear. This reckless disregard for human life cannot be ignored or normalized. We must treat drive-by shootings as a critical crisis, demanding immediate action from law enforcement, policymakers, and society to prevent further tragedy and restore safety to our neighborhoods.
Counter-claim
Frankly, the concern over drive-by shootings is vastly overstated. Compared to other pressing societal issues, their occurrence is rare and sensationalized by the media. Most communities are not affected, and resources would be better spent addressing more prevalent problems like poverty or healthcare. Focusing on drive-by shootings distracts from real, widespread challenges. It’s simply not an important problem in the grand scheme of public safety or social well-being.
