Disruptive daylight saving

  • Inappropriate summertime zones

Nature

In any region of the world there are often as many reasons for as against adjusting the standard time zone during summer to maximize natural daylight during the waking hours of most people.

Incidence

In Australia, a daylight saving regime which allows Sydney city-dwellers to have naturally light evenings in summer (and save millions of dollars of electricity), means that the inland plains of the agricultural western districts of New South Wales must suffer sweltering afternoons. Western Australia is the only state to have abolished daylight saving (confirmed by 3 referendums), despite warnings from business leaders that the resulting three-hour time difference with Sydney and Melbourne would lose the state millions of dollars. Doctors have argued that daylight saving increases skin cancer rates in schoolchildren. Farmers say it upsets their cows. Tourist resort operators on the Great Barrier Reef adopt their own summertime over an above the 4 months period of official Queensland daylight saving.
