Corporation-sanctioned assassination

  • Corporation-sanctioned killing
  • Assassination by vested economic interests

Incidence

There are many reports of assassination of worker activists, human rights activists and environmental activists where their activities were embarrassing to the interests of corporations, and notably multinational corporations. Many such reports concern plantations in developing countries, notably in Latin America. These include reports of large-scale attempts to poison or hunt down indigenous peoples. In industrialized countries highly publicized incidents have been related to the nuclear power industry. In the USA and the Far East, a wider range of incidents is reportedly linked to the development of the business interests of organized crime. It is alleged that the mysterious plane crash whereby the United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld was killed in Northern Rhodesia in 1961 was caused by mercenaries working for Belgian mining interests in the Congo.
