Zetetic panel

A group of three to six resource persons who are questioned by one or more "enquirers" in the presence of a moderator and observed by an audience. The interchange is conversational but the answers are intended to be precise and to the point. Zetetic literally means "proceeding by enquiry" and this process is best used to obtain specific details and particular information from those who have special knowledge and experience.[Advantages]

This is a variation on the panel discussion and is a most effective use of "experts" and resource people. It is often a preferable alternative to a series of lectures. Advantages include:< 1) Many questions can be covered in a short period.

2) The interaction between the panel and enquirers should lead to a full development of the subject.

3) A high interest level is maintained.

4) Specificity and appropriateness of questions and answers is at a high level.

5) Many facets of a problem can be explored simultaneously.

6) There is a high probability of the emergence of a synthesis of ideas and concepts.

7) The process is particularly valuable in conjunction with other techniques that involve the total audience in the formation of the questions and in the contributions. (see Buzz groups)< [Disadvantages]

The process is time consuming. The process depends heavily on the approach of the "enquirers" who can misinterpret their role, and set logical traps or seek to clinch debating points, make speeches, or simply distract the panel by erratic lines of enquiry. The panelists may find themselves under pressure and become flustered by the rapid interchange of ideas. Not all people "think on their feet" with the same alacrity and weak members of the panel can become overshadowed and valuable contributions lost which might have emerged in another format.
