Wash drawing

An inked drawing over which watercolours are washed or spread in successive applications, from lighter to heavier tones. The wash drawing is somewhat easily damaged and is therefore framed under glass. This method is a quick way of producing colour in graphic art and is used by advertising agencies, amateur and student artists and those producing tourist items. In the latter case a pencil sketch can be reproduced in quantity and each copy of the sketch colour-washed differently to create an 'original'.
