Trust working

Exercises, games and techniques that are used in a conference situation to raise the level of interpersonal trust amongst the participants. There are an enormous range of trust working methods, most of them based on the circular relationship between trust and risk. Trust-building activities emphasize the development of a supportive climate and norms; exploring perceived similarities in attitude and experiences; the development of a shared identity that implies substantial direction by the participants themselves; and a gradual release of undisclosed information that is easily available.[Advantages]

Can create an atmosphere that encourages participants to risk their contribution. Generally the processes are gradual and controlled by the individuals in the group and have less of a "casualty rate" than the riskworking activities.

[Disadvantages]

Time-consuming and if not introduced and given an appropriate context, they can appear to be irrelevant and confusing. Less of a break in routine, they can fail to make a significant impression.
