Ritual combat

Unlike tribal war-dances which, though containing mimetic combat, are prepatory to actual engagement with the human enemy, ritual combats are often enactments of supposed conflicts with supernatural or natural forces. European May Day combats, for example, represented the victory of Spring over Winter and world-wide, numerious ritual combats were associated with marriage ceremonies, symbolic blood-shedding having been connected with fertility.
