Television and radio stations that do not broadcast paid advertising from commercial sources are preferred by many viewers and listeners. Commercials for products and services interrupt programming, are often esthetically jarring and may be blatantly misleading as well. However, non-commercial stations operated by national or local governments, by colleges and universities, by religious denominations and by special interest groups are not free from promotional efforts, some appealing for financial support for broadcasting expenses and most advocating subscription, in numerous ways, subtle or commercial-like, to the ideas and purposes of their operating organizations. Commercial broadcasting tends to produce objectivity in news and documentary broadcasting and is independent of government apologetics although subject to tax and licensing pressures.
