Panel discussion

A group of three to six people who have a discussion in front of a larger audience. It is not a series of speeches but a purposeful discussion usually utilizing a moderator. It is most often used in the following ways:< 1. To create an informal atmosphere for communication within the group or groups in the audience.

2. To identify problems or issues and to begin to explore them.

3. To give the audience an understanding of the component parts of the problem.

4. To get different facts and points of view into a discussion framework.

5. To weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a course or courses of action.

6. As a stimulus for small group discussion.

[Advantages]

Advantages include:< 1. It can expose and focus on different points of view, different facts, and different attitudes, on a subject.

2. It allows for maximum interaction and interstimulation between panel members.

3. Maintains interest of an audience because of the dramatic presentation and the differences of opinion.

4. It is useful for defining points of agreement, areas of disagreement, and for working towards consensus.

5. It divides the responsibility for comprehensive coverage of a particular issue between the panel members who can be asked to prepare specific components of the whole presentation.

[Disadvantages]

The panel discussion depends heavily on the members and their willingness and ability to communicate with each other and the audience. Weak members' point of view can be lost. Strong members can dominate and monopolize the discussion, make speeches etc. It is difficult for the panel members to avoid making speeches on the subject they have prepared for and they may be unprepared for the line of questioning that arises out of the discussion.
