Label

Abstractly, a label is a name of something. Concretely it is one or more words attached to an object either physically as, for example, the name of medicine or food printed or embossed on containers or directly on the product, or stored in a computer to be printed-out as the name for some record or programme block. Labels provide instant identification whether they are words, numbers, codes or symbols. However, reliance solely on labels leads to disastrous mistakes in everything from medicine mix-ups, to personal actions. The misuse of labels is used as a form of advertising or product promotion where misleading product names and titles may be accompanied by falsely alluring illustrations and incorrect or insufficient indications of contents or source.
