Human external organs

Related symbols among the sense organs are the skin (the organ of touch) and the ears, eyes, nose and tongue. Organs of action are principally the hands, feet and mouth. The genital organs may be explicitly indicated or suggested by the mons pubis or pelvis. The female breasts and their nipples; the navel and the anus are the remaining organs that have prominent places in visual, verbal or literary symbolism.

A great deal of the symbolism employing the external organs makes use of the analogy of their functioning to the reference or connotation intended, e.g. smelling (detection), touching (contact), seeing (comprehension), etc.
