Flag

A retangular or triangular cloth usually displaying an insignia or promenent colours which is attached at one edge to a staff or halyard. Flags serve a variety of needs. A range of coloured flags can constitute a signalling system, while a single emblematic flag can represent national sovereignty or local authority. Emblematic flags exist also for political parties, non-governmental organizations of all types, corporations, etc. Any flag may be lowered to half-mast to signal mourning. In battle, a white flag indicates surrender.
