Euphemism

A euphemism is a figure of speech by which a negative notion, such as death, or frightening things such as the devil, the elements, diseases, etc, are designated by milder, symbolic words. The use of euphemisms is an attempt to deal with the stark realities of life and make them more acceptable. They also are used to mask social injustice.
