In-conference computer conferencing

Miniconferences with up to 50 people on a special subject that take place on computer in parallel with the main sessions. Participants can register with the focal persons and can then obtain a lists of other participants, the current "agenda", and the text of any statements already made on this agenda. The participants are able to contribute generally or to specific people or to propose changes and additions to the agenda. An "editor" can periodically select and publish statement bulletins. While it is helpful, it is not strictly necessary for each participant to have his own terminal. As long as there is fairly easy access to terminals the miniconference can continue during and even after the main conference is over. In a conference where computer terminals are used for many different activities and where there may be more than one computer mini-conference going on, it is userful to designate certain terminals for the use of the "mini-conference" participants.[Advantages]

A very intensive medium of interchange can provide for a focus on issues of minority concern. The medium itself contributes, to the form and content of the messages exchanged, a new style which can be an experience of a new language with new metaphors and images. The potential for intercultural exchange is enormous.

[Disadvantages]

Prone to misuse and abuse; expensive to set up and still rather exclusive of those who are suspicious or ignorant of computers. The lack of face to face communication introduces some constraints to trusting and risking.
