Conduit

Channels or pipes of a range of dimensions are used for conveying water, other fluids, or solids in suspension. This may be done under pressure. Such conduits are frequently linked together to form networks controlled by valves.

The use of 'channels' of communication is widespread, whether or not any corresponding physical network exists (e.g. telex, telephone or data network). Works themselves are widely recognized as conduits for meaning (e.g. 'His words carry little meaning'). It has been estimated that some 70 percent of the expressions used for talking about language are based on the conduit metaphor. Some individuals and groups are recognized as conduits for certain forms of information, especially in the case of religious teachings.
