Cartoon

The cartoon in terms of execution may be termed an outline drawing. As such it was the basis of composition of stained glass windows and icons in the Middle Ages. Such drawings, rudinmentory or slightly embellished were often used in block print publications. Those publications that were polemic used satiric cartoons in which caricature characterized the portrait art depicting opponents. Both the outline drawing in the fine arts and the polemic or political caricature preceeded the popular forms of strip and serialized strip illustrated stories, humour and other similar entertainment. The comic strip and the comic book now encompass illustrated abridgements of serious literature, classical and modern, as well as juvenilia and other ephemera including pornography, prosdytizing pamphlets, and propaganda.
