As a result of the potential chemical reaction between two distinct metals immersed together in an electrolyte (ionized solution of a compound which conducts an electric current), electrons may be released on one (the negative electrode) and allowed to flow to the other (the positive electrode) when the two are connected by an external circuit through which this flow can take place. The process only continues until the circuit is interrupted or the reactants are exhausted by the chemical process. Some forms of battery can be recharged by passing a current through them in the reverse direction.

Metaphor

When two distinct individuals or groups are present together in an environment in which they risk a change of condition or status as a result of their relationship, exposing them to each other results in a charged exchange from which one accumulates positive attributes and the other negative attributes. The competitive exchange may be used to activate an appropriate organizational programme. The process only continues whilst the two are exposed to each other or until their condition cannot be further changed by the interaction. In some cases the situation can be regenerated after the participants have refreshed themselves in other social processes.

[Features]

The method of harnessing energy resulting from difference.

[Contrast]

Phrases such as a 'charged situation' are used to refer to quite distinctive social conditions in which considerable social energy may be creatively or destructively released. Some principles of management or leadership depend upon setting two strong individuals or groups in an (antagonistically) competitive relationship to one another, especially in one form of 'divide and rule'. Some forms of therapy and difficult resolutions are based on discharging the potential energy associated with the relationship between two parties. There does not however seem to be any concern with the design of 'batteries' in order to harness such energy more effectively.

[Keys]

Distinctive components used in batteries (lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, etc). Connection in series or parallel to give higher voltage or longer capacity respectively. Fuel cells. Solar batteries, thermal batteries and nuclear batteries. Capacity limitations.
