Waiting on God (Christianity)

Waiting on God implies a continual state of passivity, dependent on the will of pure providence. In a state of surrender, such persons belong wholly to God. When God lives in the soul, nothing of the self is left. The future is not mapped out, God directs the way from moment to moment. With no spiritual direction there may be no support but God Himself. Despite distress and misery, they must wait for assistance calmly and untroubled. Neglected by men but, through love, in possession of God, they must make no effort of their own but serve God in His own way. Although seeming to live a completely ordinary existence and with no obvious distinguishing characteristics, such persons have a certain virtue about their quiet oblivion, their speech and actions, that speaks of God and affects those with whom they come into contact. Unwittingly they guide and sustain others, although they themselves may feel insignificant, bewildered and confused.
