Description

The Path of Purification distinguishes two ways of knowing about the four noble truths. There is the mundane knowledge as idea (awakening knowledge), which learns about cessation and the path through what it hears. It occurs as overcoming obsessions. Knowledge about suffering prevents the false view of individuality; knowledge about origin prevents the false view of annihilation; knowledge of cessation prevents the false view of eternity; knowledge of the path prevents the false view of inaction (seeing action is being inefficacious morally). Again, knowledge of suffering prevents wrong theories as to results, not attributing permanence, beauty, pleasure, individuality to the aggregates; knowledge of origin prevents wrong theories of cause, such as reasons for the existence of the world; knowledge of cessation prevents wrong theories about cessation, for example that final release arises in the immaterial sphere; knowledge of the path prevents wrong theories about the path of purification, such as indulgence in pleasures of the senses or in self-mortification. And there is supramundane, penetrating knowledge, which penetrates the four truths by making cessation its object. Then whoever sees suffering sees the origin of suffering, sees the cessation of suffering, sees the way leading to cessation of suffering.
