Sublimation

Although commonly considered a defence mechanism (the diversion of sexual instinct to a non-sexual aim which is socially more acceptable), sublimation is considerably more than simply a defence mechanism and is, in fact, postulated by Freud to be the means by which a development and transformation of infantile drives achieves satisfaction in artistic, ethical or cultural activity.
