Service

Service has been defined as the spontaneous result from the soul having such definite and fixed contact that it pours through the instrument of the body without conscious action on the part of the individual. It cannot therefore be learned but is evidence of the soul manifesting itself at the physical level. Development of service requires deliberate effort, conscious wisdom and the ability to work without results. As these are achieved, the inherent desire to serve will be satisfied as the individual draws on all the sources of spiritual strength.

A distinction is drawn between self-righteous service consciously engaged in and defined, responding to a need as defined by those carrying out the service and normally expecting both recognition and reward; and the lifestyle of true service which is unpretentious and based on the needs of those requiring the service, whoever they are. The former leads to glorifying of the individual at the expense of community, while the latter to drawing the community of individuals together. If any and all are served, whether they respond with thanks or by taking advantage of the service, then there can be no manipulation and great freedom arises.
