Description

A form of psychoanalysis in which an attempt is made to free the individual from the ideal image he has of himself in order to enable him to become aware of his real self in the present, rather than hope to compete within himself with his imaginary ideal. The neurotic alienation of the individual from his true self, and the associated anxiety, is held to be fostered by the conflicting social values in modern society.
