The relationship between man and man (Christianity)

In moments of crisis a primitive drive joins people together by force, friends and foes, good and evil. This drive is superior to all of them, independent of their desires and deeds. It is the spirit, the breath of God on earth. It descends on people in whatever form it wishes, as dance, eros, hunger, religion or slaughter. It does not ask permission. It does not portion out riches or capacities equally. Injustice, cruelty, longing and hunger are the four steeds that drive its way through humanity. It is never created out of happiness or comfort or glory, but out of shame and hunger and tears.

At every moment of crisis an array of men risk their lives in the front ranks as standard bearers of God to fight and take upon themselves the whole responsibility of the battle. This identification with the universe gives birth to the virtues of an ethic, responsibility and sacrifice. Responsibility to and sacrifice for the universe is why solidarity among people is no longer a tenderhearted luxury but a deep necessity. These standard bearers fight on without certainty. Action takes on a new, incalculable value and all - beauty, knowledge, hope, economic struggle, daily and seemingly meaningless cares - takes on an unexpected holiness.

Everyone has his own specific road to salvation. For one person it is disease, lies and dishonour. For that person to be saved he must plunge into disease, lies and dishonour that he may conquer them. For another person it may be the road of virtue, joy and truth. It is that person's duty to plunge into virtue, joy and truth that he may conquer them and leave them behind.
