- Thought meditation
Description
Concentration of the mind upon a particular spiritual object or idea and, while holding it there, as far as possible not deviating from it and examining it in its various aspects. As such this is an intellectual exploration into the nature of the self and the cosmos. Depending upon the nature of the object or idea chosen, and on the depth of the exploration, the meditation may become more spiritualized, more intuitive in character, less dependent upon use of words and symbols, and closer to contemplative intuitive meditation.
The following types or foci of pre-contemplative meditation have been distinguished: on the nature of the self; on the vehicles of consciousness (physical, emotional and mental); on dispassion and detachment; on motive; on the nature of faith and knowledge; on the dogmas of faith.
