Pseudologia phantastica

As opposed to hysterical amnesia, where true facts are forgotten, in pseudologia phantastica something which has not happened is remembered as true. However much the story may be shown to be intrinsically improbable or easily disproved, the individual further elaborates with more and more improbable details. The reason seems to be a need to attract respect, sympathy or attention.
