Description

Teilhard de Chardin's concept of unity as harmonized complexity entails each component of any grouping, whether, for example, a member of a society, a part of a body, or an element of a spiritual synthesis, in being perfected and fulfilled individually in order to create a harmonious whole. In particular, the summation of consciousness is not seen as a pantheist merging of individuality where each individual "grain of salt" is dissolved in a uniform ocean of the great All; but as an accentuation or "hyper-personalization" of each individual "self". This is in direct conflict with materialization and the standardization of humanity into well-ordered workers in a factory, soldiers on a parade ground and so on, with the resultant mechanization and statistical average approaches which neglect the due place of the individual person. Teilhard de Chardin maintains that individual consciousnesses are immiscible but warns that individuality is not to be confused with "personality" when a particular element seeks to become separate from all other elements. Cf St Paul's first epistle to the Corinthians XII 14-17,20: "For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body ? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing ?.... But now are they many members, yet but one body".
