Growth spirals

Human consciousness is said to evolve from relationships between the mind and its environment. According to D. Johnson, each stage or spiral is followed by a phase of transition to the next spiral when the contradictions and limitations which have arisen cause expansion or evolution by the synthesis of a new spiral, accompanied by expanded awareness.

Transitions through infancy, childhood and adolescence to social adulthood are largely dependent on external factors, although they may be hindered by lack of incentive to evolve, with consequent immature behaviour with respect to social norms for individuals at that particular age. But further development through individual self-actualization to true freedom and thence to the vision of a [seer]

is dependent on the individual him or herself. Failure to develop beyond the "social adult" stage results in stagnation, but many individuals do break through to being their "own person". Development may be hindered by psychological "assistance" as this attempts to re-establish the "social adult" norm; or it may be assisted by a guru and the incorporation of compassion for others into every action. Beyond the seer it is not possible to describe in words, although evidence of this mystic state shows that it is the ultimate in human potential and a stage of absolute enlightenment.
