Freedom from lower qualities (Sufism)

Through negation of self, [nafs]

, and its associated desires and passions which are the obstacles to attainment of mystical perfection, comes freedom from lower qualities, essential for spiritual progress. The heart is purified of all but God, who bestows purity of self on the person who desires it earnestly.
