Apara vidya (Hinduism)

Through study, the arts or other external means one comes to have indirect knowledge of the self as one with the universal Self - [Atman]

- and of the universal Self as [Brahman]

. However this is only theoretical knowledge, not the intuitive knowledge arising from direct experience - [para vidya]

- knowledge of God.
